Rolling Conversations: breaking mental-health stigma

Rolling Conversations is funded by Ealing Council and delivered by RollaDome with young people from our Degrees of Opportunity programme. It turns everyday moments in skating, creative activities, lunch and reflection into safe, age-appropriate opportunities to talk about feelings, challenge mental-health stigma and learn where to find help.

1. PrepareYoung volunteers receive induction, safe-space prompts, safeguarding boundaries and adult supervision.
2. Start naturallyShort prompts are woven into skating, games, creativity, lunch, calm time and reflection—not delivered as a classroom lesson.
3. Listen and challenge stigmaChildren can explore feelings, belonging, pressure, supportive language, trusted adults and help-seeking through talk, art, movement or fictional stories.
4. Learn and continueAnonymous themes inform future activities and family information. The same approach continues across RollaDome clubs throughout the year.

Extra family support

2

Registration opens at 10:45am. Wear comfortable activity clothing, trainers and socks. Bring a named water bottle and any agreed medication.

3

4

For children and young people

Your first day, step by step

Knowing what will happen can make arrival easier. A member of the team will explain each stage and help whenever you need it.

1

Arrive & check in

Come to registration with your parent or carer. We will welcome you, check important information and show you where to go.

2

Meet your group

Meet your group leaders, learn the camp rules and see the visual plan for the day. You can tell us what helps you feel comfortable.

3

Get ready safely

Staff will help with skates, helmet and pads. Beginners are welcome and nobody is rushed.

4

Move, create & eat

Take part in two activity rotations, enjoy lunch, drink water and use calm time to reset.

5

Reflect & celebrate

Share something you enjoyed, add to your Achievement Passport and prepare for safe collection at 3pm.

At camp, you can always…

Ask for help · ask a question · request a break · use the calm space · tell us about a worry · ask for an adjustment · say “pass” to an optional conversation · choose another safe way to participate.

  • Healthy choices and wellbeing

Paper copies are available from the camp team. Parents and carers may complete the Support Passport with staff at registration, and participants will update the Achievement Passport during camp.

Practical family guidance

Health, attendance and positive participation

Medication & care plans

Provide current written health information before camp. Medication must be labelled, in date and handed to authorised staff. Inhalers, auto-injectors and other emergency medication must be immediately available under the agreed plan.

Illness, injury & first aid

Trained staff provide first aid and record treatment. Parents or carers are contacted when needed. In an emergency we may call 999 and then contact you. Please keep emergency numbers available throughout the day.

Attendance & punctuality

Arrive for registration at 10:45am and collect promptly at 3pm. We follow up unexplained absence because places, staffing and meals are planned in advance. Cancel unused places through Eequ.

Respectful behaviour

Be kind, include others, follow safety instructions, respect personal space and equipment, and use appropriate language. Staff use calm, restorative responses and work with families where behaviour continues to affect safety or participation.

Phones, photos & valuables

Phones must remain switched off and stored unless staff permit their use for an activity or agreed support need. Children must not photograph or record others. Media consent is optional and separate from attendance.

What to bring

Comfortable activity clothes, trainers, clean socks, a named water bottle, weather-appropriate outerwear and agreed medication. Leave jewellery, expensive items, nuts, fizzy or energy drinks and food to share at home.

Food & wellbeing

A hot, balanced lunch every day

Masala Creations provides a vegetarian and non-vegetarian choice, plus water and fruit or yoghurt. The menu for each date appears in the programme cards above.

Tell us before camp

Declare every allergy, intolerance, medical diet and halal, vegetarian, vegan, cultural, faith-based or sensory food need.

School Food Standards

Food across the day is planned around starchy foods, fruit and vegetables, protein, dairy or alternatives, limited high-fat or high-sugar foods, and age-appropriate portions.

Safe service

Special meals are identified, ingredient and 14-allergen information is available, and temperature and service checks are recorded. Children must not swap or share meals.

Two clear layers of food assuranceRollaDome All Skate @ Dormers Wells holds a Food Hygiene Rating of 4 — “Good”. Separately, Masala Creations & Events Limited’s latest published FSA inspection records hygienic handling and food-safety management as “Very good”, and premises cleanliness as “Good”.

Body-worn cameras

Authorised team members will wear body cameras as part of the camp’s safeguarding and incident-management arrangements. Wearing a camera does not mean it is recording continuously.

Any activation must have a legitimate safeguarding, safety or incident-related purpose. Cameras are never used in toilets, changing areas or other places where privacy is expected.

Privacy and consent

Body-camera use is separate from promotional photography consent. Footage is handled securely, access is restricted and it is retained only in line with RollaDome’s approved policy and legal responsibilities.

Families may ask the DSL how recording applies to their child or raise a concern before attendance.

Reasonable adjustments can include: quiet arrival, visual routines, smaller groups, movement breaks, sensory support, flexible pacing and adapted activities. A diagnosis is not required to ask for help.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Who can attend?+

Children and young people aged 6–16 with a confirmed Ealing HAF booking. Places are free for eligible families and booked in weekly blocks.

Must my child already know how to skate?+

No. Complete beginners are welcome. Coaches group children by confidence and ability; skates, helmets and protective pads are provided.

What SEND support is available?+

Tell us as early as possible about sensory, communication, mobility, medical, emotional-regulation or personal-care needs. Support can include a quieter start, visual timetable, smaller group, movement break, calm space, adapted activity and extra reassurance.

Can my child leave independently?+

A young person aged 11 or over may leave independently only when written parent/carer permission has been agreed in advance. It cannot be agreed informally at the gate.

How do I cancel?+

Cancel through Eequ as soon as possible so another family may use the place and we can adjust meals and staffing.

What if someone different is collecting?+

Notify the team in advance. Children are released only to authorised adults, and identification or an agreed password may be requested.

What happens if my child is unwell?+

Please keep your child at home if they have a contagious illness, vomiting, diarrhoea, a high temperature or are not well enough to take part. Tell the team promptly and cancel through Eequ when the place will not be used.

How is medication managed?+

Tell us before attendance. Medication must be in its original labelled packaging, in date, and handed directly to the authorised team member with clear written instructions. Children must not keep medication in their bags unless an agreed care plan says otherwise.

Can my child take a break or decline an activity?+

Yes. Children may ask for help, a reasonable adjustment, a movement or calm break, or an alternative way to join in. Optional wellbeing conversations may be observed or declined without penalty.

What are the behaviour expectations?+

We use respectful, restorative and age-appropriate support. Everyone must follow safety instructions, respect personal space and equipment, use inclusive language and tell an adult if worried. Bullying, discrimination, violence and unsafe behaviour are addressed promptly.

How can I give feedback or make a complaint?+

Speak to the Programme Lead or CEO, or email customer.service@rolladome.org.uk. Safeguarding concerns should be raised immediately with the DSL. Complaints are acknowledged and managed under RollaDome’s complaints procedure.
